Tzu Jan, pronounced dsoo ron, is a Chinese word literally meaning “self-so”. It is often used to indicate “naturalness” or "spontaneity". This is a major concept in Taoism as it relates directly to things being in their natural state. It has been said that this word encapsulates the entire philosophy of Taoism, which is to be what one naturally is. 

Taoist or not Tzu Jan is a concept that we can all learn and benefit from.

Taoist Alchemy is a much larger subject than can not be fully explained here. It should be said that the Taoist Alchemy of Tzu Jan Incense and Candles is the process and science of attaining the natural state of being (tzu jan). We do this by offering tools that may be used to aid the individual in the rituals of their daily lives. Incense is used for olfactory stimulation, which can affect the mood by way of deep and primitive neural pathways.Aromatherapy is the term best known for this now, but it has been a practice of Traditional Chinese Medicine as well as most religions and spiritualities throughout history. Candles of course add to the ambience of any environment and can also be used to “throw scent” into the air around us. From the perspective of Tzu Jan Taoist Alchemy, incense and candles used in combination can be seen as an internal, psychological feng shui.

Tzu Jan incense are resin based, meaning that they must be burned with a charcoal. The incense pieces or powders are placed on the center of the burning coal which ignites them giving off a light or heavy pillar of smoke, depending on how much is applied. Resin incenses are preferred for meditation and ritual due to their historical correspondences, heavy smoke, and traditional history.
